As the leader of our Datadog Engineering team at RapDev, I’m often asked whether someone should consider applying for a role here and what the hiring process entails. In the spirit of transparency, which we value tremendously here, this is an in-depth look at how we approach hiring and interviewing.

Defining the Right Fit

At RapDev, the hiring process starts well before candidates even apply. Each role we open is defined not just by technical requirements, but also by the unique qualities and values we believe will enhance our team. We emphasize cultural alignment, adaptability, and the ability to contribute to and thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

We look for individuals who are not just highly skilled but also deeply aligned with our values: curiosity, integrity, and a desire for continuous learning. This ensures that each hire is not only equipped to excel in their role but is also energized by RapDev’s overall mission and approach to work.

Creating a Candidate-Centric Experience

We know that the best candidates are also evaluating us during the hiring process, so we strive to make it a positive, transparent, and meaningful experience. Communication is key; from the moment a candidate applies, we keep them informed about their status, provide clear timelines, and offer a glimpse into what makes RapDev a unique place to work.

Every step of our process is designed to ensure candidates feel valued and respected. We see our interviews as a two-way street—candidates should feel empowered to ask questions, explore our culture, and understand the unique challenges and opportunities that come with working here. This candidate-centric approach reflects our belief that finding the right fit is about mutual selection, where both RapDev and the candidate can make an informed decision.

Our Interview Process: A Balanced Approach

Our interview process includes multiple stages, each designed to assess technical skills, soft skills, and cultural fit:

  • Screening Call: The process begins with an initial call where we review your experience, motivations, and alignment with the role’s key requirements. This call also serves as an opportunity for candidates to learn more about RapDev and ask any preliminary questions.
  • In-Depth Interview: After the initial screening, selected candidates proceed to a more detailed interview, usually involving team leads or managers. These interviews dive deeper into technical expertise but also explore the candidate’s soft skills, such as communication, teamwork, and adaptability. We’re particularly interested in learning how candidates handle feedback, navigate challenges, and contribute in collaborative environments.
  • Technical Assessment: For all technical roles we conduct a skills-based assessment to understand the candidate's technical proficiency. This could be a coding example, a system design task, or a practical case study tailored to the role. Our technical assessments are carefully chosen to reflect real-life challenges at RapDev, allowing us to gauge a candidate's problem-solving approach, adaptability, and creativity. We aren’t a LeetCode shop. We’d much rather let our candidates work through technical examples that relate to the real work they will be encountering instead of arbitrary coding challenges.
  • Cultural Fit Interview: One of the final stages in our interview process is a culture-focused discussion. This interview emphasizes alignment with RapDev’s core values and work culture (check out our Ethos here!). This conversation helps us ensure that each candidate isn’t just technically qualified but is also likely to thrive within our environment. At this point we’re really just looking to get a sense of who you are, what drives you, and how you like to have fun outside of work (we work hard here but try not to take ourselves too seriously either!).

Feedback and Continuous Improvement

At RapDev, we view hiring as an evolving process and view our interview cycles as an opportunity for us to learn and improve. Candidates are encouraged to provide feedback on their experience, and we analyze this information to refine our processes. Whether it’s improving our interview questions, streamlining the application process, or enhancing candidate communication, we’re committed to creating a world-class hiring experience.

Conclusion

At RapDev, hiring the right people is critical for us to continue to provide the best possible experience for our customers. By focusing on technical skills, soft skills and cultural alignment we ensure that each new hire is not only capable of delivering results but also driven by a sense of purpose and belonging. Our process is thorough, transparent, and designed to find individuals who will not only succeed in their roles but also make RapDev a better place for everyone. If all of this resonates with you we encourage you to explore our open positions!
